What do you know, I managed to get around to typing up something for this within 3 weeks of the last post, for a change. Largely it’s because I’m being non-productive at work, so I wouldn’t hold your breath that it’s the start of a trend towards more regular updates just yet though
I’m also testing out some desktop based WordPress editing software (I’m typing this up in Windows Live Writer) instead of using the shitty web-based editing stuff which is so paaaaaaainfully sloooooooooow for me, so this may just break a little and not work properly, so if this post gets all funky and messed up please bear with me, & I’ll try fix it asap.
So anyway, what’s been happening the last week or since I last updated this? Not a whole lot reeeeaally, certainly nothing much productive.
I’m still not smoking, which makes 122 days as of this morning, and I’m also back down below 127kgs in “Operation: Make Ian Less of a Fat-Ass”, so there’s progress there too, if not as much as I’d like. The cycling is also proceeding apace, & I can feel my fitness is improving each time I ride, though as with the losing weight thing, not as quickly as I’d like. I think I need to accept that I’m not 20 anymore, and that 40 year old me isn’t going to see the same results in the same timeframe as I used to. This shit is going to take longer, and require more effort, to achieve than it used to. But meh, whatever, so long as I keep seeing progress it’s all good, and it keeps me sort of busy and out of mischief I guess.
Photography wise, you may have seen I manage to get a few older galleries uploaded to this, though I have to say I am not at all impressed with the baseline gallery functions you get with WP, & will be trying to find something better along the way. I also managed to catch a few shots of a little meerkat at work this past week using my phone, a few of which came out fairly nicely. I don’t have the photos with me unfortunately, having downloaded them onto the PC at home, so I’ll have a look at uploading a few of them a little later, when I’m home again.
And yes, I did say “using my phone, a few of which came out fairly nicely”.
I’m a certified “shiny toy” junky, so I don’t have a regular smartphone, and instead took out a second contract, and replaced a perfectly serviceable and good Note II, just so I could get one of these…..
Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
One of the biggest issues with photography is carrying around a camera and actually being able to take a photo at any time – you never know when something you want a photo of will appear. You get some fantastic compacts these days, but it’s an extra piece of tech that takes up space in your pockets or purse, and is one more thing to remember to keep charged and so on, which makes that solution less than ideal. Modern smartphones are however rapidly becoming a viable alternative to the compact camera, with high res sensors and sophisticated software driving them that allow you to do everything with them that a camera can do, and the only real advantage as compact camera has had over a smartphone has been the glass in front of the sensor.
But that’s changing, as you can see from the picture above. That’s a fully featured Android smartphone, that can do anything you’d expect a smartphone to do. And it has a proper 10x lens too, with a 16Mp sensor behind it, which is better than many compact cameras that are available. Hell, it’s not all that far behind my DSLR in terms of resolution. We really are increasingly at the point where Star Trek is now in terms of the tech we have available to us, as so aptly illustrated by what looks like a young and grumpy Alan Tudyk……
all this crap, and more, now fits in your pocket……
Anyway, I think I’d best end off here for now so I can A: do some work, and B: see if this offline editor thing actually works. Hold thumbs this works, & I’ll be back again to waffle some more soon, promise
